How to Handle Challenging Coaching Conversations
Navigating challenging conversations with athletes requires preparation and finesse. In this course, Joe Friel reviews a case study from his career. He explores ways to avoid awkward moments by setting expectations and boundaries and shares conversational cues that can steer relationships in more positive directions.
Learn how to approach difficult coaching conversations with greater clarity, establish healthy boundaries, and turn challenging situations into opportunities for stronger athlete relationships.
Our online course, “How to Handle Challenging Coaching Situations,” shows you how to navigate the human side of coaching, from identifying the right coach-athlete fit to addressing poor communication, unrealistic expectations, noncompliance, and sensitive performance concerns. You’ll learn effective ways to respond before small frustrations become major problems, while protecting both the athlete’s well-being and your role as a coach.
You’ll learn how to:
- Screen prospective athletes with targeted questions about goals, daily stress, training habits, practical constraints, motivation, and expectations—so you can recognize compatibility and potential challenges from the start.
- Adapt your communication to different personalities, whether an athlete needs encouragement, greater autonomy, a simplified plan, or reassurance that recovery is the right next step.
- Set clear communication guardrails, including where athletes should ask questions, when they can expect feedback, and how to separate daily check-ins from long-term planning.
- Address difficult behavior using practical communication strategies, redirect weight-focused conversations toward health and performance, recognize when an issue falls outside your scope, and know when ending the relationship may be the most professional choice.
The course draws from Joe Friel’s The Craft of Coaching and includes his candid case study of a high-maintenance athlete, offering a real-world look at how warning signs can emerge and how coaches can keep difficult situations from becoming personal. It also includes valuable lessons from coach and athlete Siren Seiler-Viken.
Whether you are managing an athlete who ignores the plan, demands constant attention, struggles with life stress, or asks for guidance beyond your expertise, this course gives you clear questions, communication frameworks, and boundaries you can bring into your coaching immediately.
See how to enter difficult conversations with a plan, preserve trust when challenges arise, and build coach-athlete relationships that are clearer, healthier, and more sustainable.
