How to Be a Good, Successful, and Happy Coach

In this one-credit course, Joe Friel introduces the foundations coaches need to enjoy a career as a good, happy, and successful coach.

How to Be a Good, Successful, and Happy Coach, an online course for endurance sports coaches from The Craft of Coaching with Joe Friel

Joe Friel, the most experienced personal endurance coach in America, shares an introduction to the foundations of successful coaching that are explored in depth in our advanced course, Mastering Coaching Skills.

This course introduces the parts of coaching that happen between workouts: the conversations, observations, and adjustments that guide athletes.

This course shares a basic framework for managing common coaching challenges: earning athlete trust, giving feedback, setting work-life boundaries, spotting athlete stress, adjusting training plans, and helping athletes gain confidence and skills. You’ll learn how to:

  • Ask more useful questions of your athletes, including identifying what is really behind frustration or low motivation, and knowing when to adjust the plan versus when to reinforce the process.
  • Recognize when non-training factors like life stress, mental well-being, and health history are affecting training.
  • Reinforce the commitment of your athletes by explaining the “why”.
  • Build athlete trust while maintaining professional boundaries and sustainable coach-athlete relationships.

This course discusses intro concepts to help coaches navigate the moments that affect motivation, trust, and responsibility for training.

You’ll come away with a clearer coaching lens for building stronger relationships, improving communication, and creating the conditions for better training, better performance, and longer-lasting coach-athlete partnerships.
